General Information
Passports and Visa's
A valid passport is required for entry into Zambia and Visa fees payable are $50 single entry and $80 double entry for all citizens excluding SADC citizens who enter no charge.
Airport Taxes
A Departure Tax is levied by authorities on all departures from Zambia airports. The
current Domestic Departure Tax is US$8.00 and International Departure Tax is US$20.00.
This must be paid by the passenger in USD cash (large heads). Please remember to bring
the correct denominations.
Health, Vaccinations and Insurance
The Kafue National Park is a malarial area; before you leave on safari please contact
your local medical doctor for the correct Prophylaxis. Ensure that you complete the course,
which may extend well after you arrive back home, and should you feel any odd symptoms,
consult your doctor and advise him that you have been in a malarial area. Although Zambia
does not require any inoculations prior to entry, precaution is recommended against tetanus
and hepatitis. Should you pass through a cholera zone on your journey to Zambia, you will
be required to be in possession of a valid Immunization Certificate. It is very important
that you consult with your doctor prior to departure to obtain accurate and up-to-date
advice on health requirements and take the necessary precautions. Comprehensive travel,
medical and repatriation insurance is strongly recommended.
Money and Currencies
The local currency is the Zambian Kwacha, which together with travellers cheques, US dollars
and pounds sterling is accepted at the lodge. Credit cards are regrettably not accepted at
this time. US Dollars, Sterling and Euros are readily exchanged at banks and Forex Bureaux.
Please avoid changing money on the streets; it is illegal and you are likely to be ripped-off.
Please note that the older US Dollars with the 'small heads' cannot be exchanged in Zambia.
Make sure you bring the newer, 'larger headed' notes.
Tipping
Although not expected tips are always appreciably and enthusiastically received. Our lodge
policy is that should a guest decide to tip the staff, that the tip be placed in a “tip box”,
positioned in the lodge. At the end of every month it is equally shared amongst the local staff.
Should you decide to tip we recommend you do not exceed an amount of US$10.00 per person per night.
Power and electricity
In order to maintain the tranquility of the lodge and its surroundings the use of generators is
kept to an absolute minimum. Lighting is provided predominantly by paraffin lamps, hot water by
gas geysers, and refrigeration by gas and paraffin. No facilities exist for hairdryers. The
charging of camera batteries and laptops can be arranged. We have solar power system installed.
Communications
A satellite telephone is available, although only in the case of emergencies, at a cost of
US$5.00 per minute (minimum $20.00).
What to bring/Clothing
As you will, more than likely, be travelling around Zambia in small charter aircraft, it is
recommended that you only use smallish soft bags and that you do not exceed a maximum weight
of 12 kgs. It is therefore very important that you bring the correct safari gear with you. This
includes the standard khaki-coloured outfits of trousers, shorts and shirts. Remember trousers
and long sleeved shirts are recommended for evening-wear, with a sweater and warm jacket on
stand-by for those chilly times. Also make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes and trainers.
Other necessities include binoculars, cameras and torches (don't forget spare batteries), sunscreen,
a hat and sunglasses as well as insect repellent and anti-histamine cream for those irritating
insect bites. Your personal toiletries should include a small medical kit. The lodge will provide
the basics, but should you suffer from allergies please bring your own medical necessities.
